What Hours Can a Cosmetologist Work?

What-Hours-Can-a-Cosmetologist-Work

Are you interested in starting a career as a cosmetologist? Are you wondering what hours a cosmetologist can work?

Since Cosmetology is generally considered a creative industry, many cosmetologists have the option to have flexible work schedules. Many cosmetologists work full time, but some, depending on their employers, have the opportunity to create their own schedules and working hours. Cosmetology can offer less scheduling constraint than the typical 9-to-5.

Where Can a Cosmetologist Work?

The cosmetology industry can provide various avenues and opportunities for employment. Cosmetologists can hold the following positions, depending on whether they decide to specialize in hair care, skin care, or nail care:

  • Hair stylist
  • Nail technician
  • Salon or spa manager
  • Beautician
  • Wedding and event stylist
  • Makeup artists
  • Esthetician

Most cosmetologists seek employment at salons, spas, hotels, or resorts, but other industries, like the film and TV industry, also employ cosmetologists for beautification.

Industries with the highest levels of employment [1] for hairdressers, hair stylists, and cosmetologists are personal care services, general merchandise stores, health and personal care stores, motion picture and video industries, and traveler accommodation.

Cosmetology Hours Vary by Employer

Depending on their employers, cosmetologists may not need to maintain stiff schedules, and instead may be able to enjoy flexible hours. The world of cosmetology often offers morning, daytime, and evening shifts, making the industry a great career option for busy individuals like moms.

Because many salons and spas have broad hours of operation, there may be available hours during evenings or on Saturdays and Sundays, allowing for a flexible schedule. Part-time positions may also be available.

Plus, many salons have changed their hours [2], shifting to a concept called “primetime hours” to accommodate needs of clients who work 9-to-5. “Primetime hours” can involve opening later in the morning to stay open later in the evening and adding on extra evening and weekend hours.

In addition, as a licensed cosmetologist, you may have the potential to be an entrepreneur and own your own business. With your own salon or spa, you may need to work long hours, but you will have complete control over your schedule. Another avenue of entrepreneurship may be becoming a makeup artist with your own clientele. These artists can apply makeup on individuals at night and during weekends for special events.
