Trucking FAQs
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that CDL truck drivers, and most tractor-trailer drivers, are long-haul drivers who operate vehicles that weigh in at more than 26,000 lbs. Depending on their employers and positions, some truck drivers can drive national routes, allowing for plenty of travel as they work.
The CDL Training Course at Delta Technical College in Mississippi is 16 days.
HOW MUCH DO CDL TRUCK DRIVERS MAKE?
For heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, the median annual wage was $57,440 in May 2024, according to BLS. After completing CDL training, professional drivers are typically paid by the mile and work full-time with the potential to earn bonuses.
WHERE CAN I WORK AS A CDL TRUCK DRIVER?
Many truck drivers find employment in truck transportation, wholesale trade, manufacturing, and construction, and some are self-employed. Truck drivers spend most of their time on the road, which can be a major lifestyle adjustment.
Most drivers’ routes are assigned by their dispatchers, but some drivers plan their own routes. Depending on their jobs, drivers can take long routes throughout the country that require them to be away from home for days at a time or drivers can select local routes, which may require them to drive two shipments in a day.
Is Mississippi a good state to find jobs in trucking?
Mississippi is a great location for trucking companies, due to access and proximity to water, railroads and air transport. Memphis is considered a ‘hub’ for trucking companies, creating demand for drivers.
ARE CDL TRUCK DRIVERS IN DEMAND?
The BLS predicts about 240,300 openings for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers are projected each year, on average, over the decade (2023-2033). As the economy depends on truck transportation, the demand for drivers will increase. Currently, trucks transport most of the freight in the United States, so drivers are in demand as much as all other occupations.
OTR stands for “over-the-road” trucking. It refers to long-distance truck driving that often involves transporting freight across multiple states or regions.
What's the difference between behind-the-wheel and on-the-range training?
CDL training at DTC includes both behind-the-wheel and on-the-range training. You’ll practice driving a commercial vehicle under the supervision of a licensed instructor. Behind-the-wheel training includes real-world driving situations on roads and highways. On-the-range training is where you’ll practice maneuvers like backing and turning in a safe, off-road environment.
HOW MUCH DOES CDL TRAINING COST?
The total cost of the CDL Training Course is $4,000.
