Course Description for Major Appliance Repair

6 Weeks/ 240 total clock hours which includes 180 clock hours-lab/60 clock hours-lecture


This six week course consists of training with each week focusing on a different aspect of Major Appliance Repair. The course will cover the installation and repair of electric and gas ranges, microwaves, dishwasher, domestic refrigerators, automatic washers, gas and electric dryers, garbage disposals, water heaters, and cook tops. Also basic electricity applied to appliances along with schematic reading procedures, identifying components and electrical symbols, appliance service troubleshooting techniques, identifying proper operating conditions of appliance according to NEC and Manufacturers Specification. The course objective is to provide each student with the basic knowledge and skills as a quality entry-level employee in the major appliance industries. The student will be eligible to sit for the NASTEC (National Appliance Service Technician Certification). Successful completion of the Major Appliance Repair (MAR) course and EPA Section 608 Core, Type I, and Type II certification exams will entitle the student to a Major Appliance Repair diploma.


The MTI MAR program consists of six weeks of training, with each week focusing on a different aspect of Major Appliance Repair. Upon course completion, the student will aquire EPA Section 608 and NASTeC certifications. This course is geared to serve an industry which is facing a great shortage of qualified technicians, and the short course time aims to get people out into the workforce quickly.
